I’ll be honest. I’m not usually a person that likes musicals. There are a few that I love but for the most part I am just not into singing shows. However, that all changed when I got a sneak peek of ABC’s new hit show Galavant which airs it’s first episode tonight. This show is a mixture of humor and fun and it’s unlike anything I have ever seen on primetime TV before.
Once upon a time, the dashing hero, Galavant (Joshua Sasse), lost the love of his life, Madalena (Mallory Jansen), to the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson). Now, our fallen hero is ready to take revenge and restore his “happily ever after.” But it won’t be without a few twists and turns along the way.
Galavant stars Joshua Sasse as Galavant, Timothy Omundson as King Richard, Vinnie Jones as Gareth, Mallory Jansen as Madalena, Karen David as Isabella and Luke Youngblood as Sid.
In November I got a chance to sit down with Dan Fogelman, the writer and executive producer of Galavant, Alan Menken (composer) & Glenn Slater (lyricist) and the incredibly handsome Joshua Sasse who plays Galavant. I also saw the pilot episode for Galavant and was hooked! I really didn’t know what to expect with Galavant, but I had no idea how funny this show would end up being. In the first episode, which will air January 4th at 8pm ET, Sir Galavant loses his true love, Madalena, to the evil King Richard. He’s devastated and falls into a deep and drunken despair.
As Galavant’s about to hit rock bottom, Princess Isabella shows up with a quest to save her kingdom, defeat the despicable King Richard, and give Galavant the chance to reclaim Madalena. After the episode a surprise guest, Joshua Sasse, entered the room (full of women I might add) and sat down to chat with us about the show.
First let me say just how SWEET Joshua Sasse is. And his accent, I could have listened to him all day. One thing that I found really interesting when talking with Joshua was that he actually didn’t know that Galavant was a musical at first. He was told on the way to his casting interview that he would be singing a song for Alan Menken! I can’t imagine how nerve-racking that must have been.
Galavant Guest Stars
One of the things that I think is going to really make this show so much better is the outstanding line-up of guest stars. We’re talking people like John Stamos, Weird Al Yankovich, Ricky Gervais and Hugh Bonneville.
I will warn you if you are planning on watching Galavant with your children, the show does contain some adult humor. Some of the jokes would probably go over a child’s head but I want you to be aware. It might be a good idea to watch the first show without the kids and see what you think. I know all parents are different in what they allow their kids to watch, so it’s really a personal choice. The show really reminded me a lot of a mixture of Monty Python and The Princess Bride. The humor runs along the same lines as those shows.
Galavant Airs Tonight on ABC!
I am so excited for you guys to finally be able to see Galavant. Tonight the first two episodes will air back to back starting at 8:00pm ET. Each episode lasts 30 minutes. Galavant is only a 4 week series so in total there will be 8 episodes.
So Why Should You Watch Galavant?
1. It’s funny! This show is so much more than just a musical. Even if you’re not really into musicals I would really encourage you to give Galavant a shot. I will almost guarantee you’ll crack a laugh or two.
2. The eye candy. Ok let’s be honest, there is nothing wrong with a little bit of eye candy and there is plenty of that to go around in Galavant. Joshua Sasse is not only a gorgeous guy but he is really talented as well.
3. It’s a unique show unlike anything on TV.
4. If you loved Monty Python, Game of Thrones or The Princess Bride, you’ll love Galavant.
5. There are a total of 33 songs that will be featured in the first eight episodes!
6. Music from Galavant comes from Broadway and Hollywood award-winning musical team—composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and lyricist Glenn Slater (“The Little Mermaid,” “Tangled”).
I’ve got my DVR set for all episodes of Galavant, I sure don’t want to miss any of them. You can watch the first two episodes with me tonight on ABC. Remember the first episode will start at 8:00pm ET sharp!
