I am probably the one person alive that hasn’t seen the original Total Recall that stars Arnold Schwarzenegger so I wasn’t sure what to expect with the new movie. I first saw the previews when the hubby and I went on a date night to see Ted and it immediately peeked my interest. The trailer was intense with action, sci-fi and of course the incredibly handsome Colin Farrell so I knew this movie had to be a hit. So on August 3rd, my husband and I dropped my kids off at my parents house and headed out on a movie date night to see Total Recall.
The movie starts off just as I expected very intense and your immediately drawn to Douglas Quaid, played by Colin Farrell. Douglas is a factory worker who is tormented by the same recurrent dream where he is being chased and trying to get away from something. He is married to his high-school sweetheart, played by Kate Bekinsale, but he still wonders if their is more to life than what he is living. He decides to check out Total Rekall, a place that can turn your dreams into real memories but something goes terribly wrong in the process. He was suppose to get the memories implanted of life as a spy but now he is living these memories. Is it real or just rekall?
Even though there were some pretty good scenes in the film, I wasn’t that impressed. With such a large budget for high tech effects you would think that the story line would have been just a little bit better. It starts off great and then quickly fizzles out towards the middle. I felt like the action scenes were all the same and it felt very repetitive. Kate Bekinsale and Jennifer Biel are both great in the film and the first action fight between the two was pretty good but then it just gets sort of boring. Even though this film is set in the future their isn’t really much sci-fi to it other than the flying cars and robots, so if your expecting aliens or life in mars you out of luck. I was a bit disappointed with Total Recall and feel like there should have been more of a story line or plot and it would have been much better. Sadly I have to give this film a 3/5 and really I’m giving it a higher rating because the special effects were pretty cool but if your wondering if you should head to the theaters or wait, my suggestion would be to rent it on redbox in a few months.
