I love both of my kids so much and I try so hard to make sure that they know this everyday. Jeremy has hit the age (he is almost 7) where he doesn’t really follow directions. Mornings are the worst around are home because he takes him SO much time to get ready and gets easily distracted with playing with the dogs or other things in his room. I try to make everything go smooth in the mornings but most of the time he ends up getting in trouble some way or another and I feel so guilty after he is at school.
This morning he woke up before anyone and got himself dressed and brushed his teeth, so reluctantly I let him watch TV while he ate cereal because he had 45 minutes until school started. I made Aubrey breakfast and started making Jeremy’s lunch when I heard his bowl of cereal spill all over him. Now any other day this wouldn’t have been a major problem but since it’s picture day and I had his clothes ironed and ready to go it quickly turned into a big problem. At this point we have 15 minutes before we have to go so I am rushing around the house trying to get another outfit together. He got into trouble because he was playing and not eating his cereal like he was suppose to so I told him from now on, he will have to eat at the table no matter what.
He was very upset that he was in trouble and started to cry on the way to school. I gave him a hug and told him that I was upset that he was playing and not eating, not that he had spilled the cereal. I watched him walk into school, sad and my heart just sank. I hate seeing my kids sad and this overwhelming sense of guilt rushed over me and I felt like this was my fault for letting him eat somewhere else besides the kitchen table. I often feel guilty like this anytime my kids get into trouble and I often feel like the worlds worst mom. Aren’t mom’s suppose to come equipped with extra patience!
How do you guys handle the mornings or when your kids get into trouble. Am I the only one who feels this guilty? Thanks for letting me vent!!
