Every year around February my family and I start planning our annual trip to Oklahoma City. During Spring Break each year we load up in the 4Runner and head out on a 90 minute road trip to one of the best places to visit in Oklahoma. We have been going to OKC every year for the past 4 years and it’s sort of become a family tradition. One of the places that we have to visit when we travel into OKC is the Science Museum Oklahoma.
Science Museum Oklahoma is filled with all sorts of fascinating exhibits and in order to really explore the museum I recommend you spend at least 4-5 hours if not more out of your day. There is something for everyone in the museum whether your an infant, toddler, teenager or adult. We are always excited about our trips to the museum because each year there is something new. On the bottom level of the museum you will find kids space which is a huge hit among the younger crowd. On one side there is a space for kids older than 3, they can get inside of a huge tractor, play different mind games, or even try to stop water in a large trough by making bridges. My kids love this area and we always end up spending at least an hour going through all of these exhibits.
Next to the kids space is a exciting crime adventure called Whodunit? Like most of the exhibits in the museum this is a hands on experience which allows parents and kids to go through the rooms and try to figure out Who Done it?! This is a crime exhibit so it’s your responsibility to look through the clues, just like a detective, and solve the crime. This was actually our first year going through this exhibit and it was a really fun experience to learn about forensics and what all goes into solving a murder.
Other things to experience on the ground floor of the museum include Tinkering Garage, Explorazone and one of the most popular exhibits Gadget Trees. Gadget Trees is always the most crowded area when we visit the museum and for good reason, it has the nation’s largest spiral slide and one of the largest trees in North America. It’s HUGE. Kids can climb to the top, slide down the slide or drop soft balls to the kids down below. On the other side you can climb into one of the coolest tree houses ever made. I love this spot because there is also benches for parents to rest on while your kids burn off some of their energy.
Of course no visit to the Science Museum Oklahoma would be complete without catching a few shows. Science live is a 30 minute show that includes audience participation. Throughout the show you will learn interesting facts while watching cool science experiments. What kid doesn’t like to see things blow up? Also playing at the museum is the planetarium which takes you into a dark room and lets you experience the night’s sky like you’ve never seen before. I had no idea that you could see Mars without looking through a telescope.
Upstairs you will we taken into the world of space. Kids can climb inside a space simulator and blast off into space without leaving the ground. The space exhibit is very interesting because they have space suits and equipment that were actually used by astronauts and included by each of these is a story of how the suit was used and who it was worn by.
Families can bring in their own food for lunches or you can eat in the food court with a variety of food that everyone is sure to like. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop after your trip to pick up some fun souvenirs! Our family had a fantastic time and the museum this year and we can’t wait to start planning our trip for next year. If your ever in the OKC area and looking for a fun and exciting family place to visit I highly recommend the Science Museum Oklahoma. Ticket Prices for the Exhibits only is $9.95 for kids 12 and under and seniors and $11.95 for adults.
