When I brought my son home from the hospital I knew that I would be in for many sleepless nights. That pretty much goes with the territory when you have a newborn. What I didn’t expect was that I would be waking up several times a night just to make sure my baby was ok, that he was breathing. It got so bad at times that I would wake up in a panic if I had slept to long, only to rush to his bed and see that he was ok. This went on for weeks and caused unnecessary awake time when I should have been sleeping. I knew that I couldn’t go living like a zombie so I searched for sleep advice online and came across the Owlet Baby Care.

What is the Owlet

The Owlet is a device that measures your babies vitals signs. It keeps track of your babies heart rate and oxygen level through the same pulse oximetry that hospitals use all through a small sock. This gives parents peace of mind that they don’t have to be up all night watching their babies every move.

The Owlet consists of 3 main pieces which are

  • The Base Station which takes readings from your sock and transmits them via wifi to your phone.
  • A sock which transmits your babies vital sign readings to the base station via bluetooth. The Owlet comes with 3 different sizes.
  • The Owlet App which allows you to monitor your babies readings via your smart phone.

If your babies heart rate drops or gets too high, or if their oxygen level gets low the Base station will light up red and sound an alarm. You will also be alerted via the Owlet app on your phone.

Owlet Review

Our first night sleeping with the Owlet was probably the best nights sleep I’ve had in months! Well at least since the babies been here. I actually felt such relief knowing that if my babies heart rate dropped, or he stopped breathing I would be alerted. While we didn’t have any vital sign issues, we were alerted that the sock had come off of the baby. This reassured me that the Owlet was working as it should be.

I love being able to glance at my phone and see that my babies vital signs are in normal range. That way even if he is taking a nap I don’t have to wake him up by going into the room to check on him. And if he is squirming around, the monitor will let you know that too.

At first I was a little skeptical if the Owlet really does work but after using it for a couple of weeks I know that it does. My only regret with this product is not getting it sooner. I lost a lot of sleep in those first few months that I didn’t really need to. Next time I will be prepared.
