Music is one of those things that can bring people of all walks of life together. If there’s one thing that most people can agree on, it’s that music is an essential part of life. It’s what we listen to when we are happy, sad, angry or even heartbroken. But music is much more than what you hear on the radio. There is so much that goes into making music. And with the help of Mick Rock, who is hosting On The Record With Mick Rock on Ovation TV, you’ll be able to find out find out more about your favorite artists and inspirations of some of their favorite songs.
Who is Mick Rock
I am so glad you asked! Mick Rock is a British photographer who is pretty amazing. He is best known for capturing some of the most iconic images of rock and roll legends. I’m sure you have seen a few of them. From Queen and David Bowie to the Sex Pistols and Blondie, Rock is often referred to as “The Man Who Shot the Seventies.” Today, Mick is as in-demand as ever; photographing legends-in-the-making like Snoop Dog, Daft Punk, The Killers, Cee Lo Green, and the Black Keys, among many others.
On The Record With Mick Rock
Featuring guest stars Josh Groban, Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips, and Patti LaBelle, On The Record with Mick Rock goes into each of the artists’ hometowns to check out the sights and sounds that inspire them. A unique spin on the musician profile series, the show’s stripped-down style and Mick’s unapologetic rapport with his guests produces candid conversations and musical performances not usually seen on television.
This upcoming Sunday August 23rd, On The Record With Mick Rock will feature the very talented Patti LaBelle. In this episode Grammy and Hall of Fame artist Patti LaBelle takes Mick on a personal tour of Philadelphia, visiting the theater that launched her career and stopping by her childhood home where she first found her voice with a broomstick microphone. After grabbing a bite at her favorite soul food spot in the City of Brotherly Love, Patti invites Mick into her living room for an intimate performance of What Can I Do For You?
Mick’s new show inspired me to update my current Spotify playlist with some of his most famous subjects. It’s amazing what some new tunes can do for your day. Hopefully these songs can inspire you too. Check out what I am listening to.
What I’m Listening To
Flaming Lips: She Don’t Use Jelly
This is such a silly yet so catchy song. I was probably in middle school when this song came out but I can remember belting it out at the top of my lungs as a teen. And I had sort of forgot about this song up until recently, so I am happy to give it some new life again.
Patti LaBelle: Lady Marmalade
Mrs. LaBelle. There will never be another like her. This woman can sing! And even after all these years, Lady Marmalade is still a favorite among people of all ages. This is one of those songs that get’s you in the dancing mood.
Josh Groban: To Where You Are
Josh Groban is one of my favorite artists of all times. He is such a talented singer and his songs are inspiring. When my dad passed away a couple of years ago we were looking for songs to play at his funeral and I came across To Where You Are. It was so beautiful and moving. This song will always have a special place in my heart because it will forever remind me of my dad.
David Bowie: Let’s Dance
Bowie. Bowie. Bowie. This man is talented on so many levels and the fact that he was never afraid to step outside the box, makes him even better. There are several of his songs that I could add to my playlist but if I had to just pick one I’d go with Let’s Dance. I’ve always really loved this song, it just puts me in a great mood.
Kings Of Leon: Sex Is On Fire
I must have heard this song over a thousand times and I still get goosebumps. There is just something about Caleb Followill’s voice that is mesmerizing. This song will definitely get your heart pumping. I like to crank it up really loud and sing along, when I am alone in the car.
Blondie: One Way Or Another
Even though this song is about a stalker, it strangely makes the prefect workout song.
