Fun Saving Money

When Jeremy started Preschool a couple of years ago I can remember going to his class parties and seeing a couple of the mom’s bring in homemade treats that were amazing. I have always wished that I could be creative like that in the kitchen but never really had the tools to get me started. This year is going to be different thanks to my friends at Wilton.

Wilton has been the industry leader in cake decorating, quality bake ware, and food crafting for over 80 years. They have been helping families celebrate by providing step by step instructions and information online and through their publications making it easy for anyone to make their own special cakes, candy, cupcakes, cookies and more.

Wilton was kind enough to send me the Heart Pops Silicone Mold and Heart Pops Cookie Pan.

I have never used a silicone baking mold before so I visited Wilton online for tips and recipe ideas to help me get started. I decided to try my hand at the Sparkling Heart Cake on a Stick recipe. I already had a box of strawberry cake mix so I used this for my cake batter and followed the instructions on the box.

Here is what the front of the mold looks like.

And here is the back. This is what your finished product should look like.

You should only fill the molds up about 2/3 of the way full. I overfilled the first time and had to make a second batch. I really like these molds because you can make so many different things with them. These would be perfect to make frozen yogurt pops!

Here is the pops after I overfilled them..oops! The notch at the end holds the sticks into place so that they will stay put while the cake pops bake. After the cake baked for about 22 minutes I removed it from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes or so. The heart pops came out really easy and look really good! I purchased some of the Wilton Candy Melts from Walmart and used those to coat the hearts with.

After the first coat of candy melts were dry, I used more to out line the hearts and then I sprinkled red glitter over the hearts. Here is my finished sparkling heart cake on a stick!

For my first attempt I think these turned out really good! I only had red sprinkles this time but I think for the next batch I will try different colors like white candy melts and red sprinkles.I also made up a batch of Rice Crispy Treat Hearts using the Heart Cookie Pan. These were so easy to make! For those of you that need a good rice crispy treat recipe here is what you need:

1/4 Cup of Butter
5 Cups of Rice Crispies
4 Cups of Marshmallows

Heat the butter over low heat until melted. Stir in your marshmallows and keep stirring on low heat until completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in your rice crispies until coated well with the marshmallow mixture. After this I coated the heart shaped pan lightly with cooking spray and placed the rice crispy mixture into the pan. I had a hard time getting the sticks to stay so I had to add a little more of the mixture on top and pack it down and that seemed to do the trick.

I placed them in the freezer for a few minutes so that they would set up quickly and I could decorate them. I have always just used a regular pan to make my rice crispy treats so I was excited to see how these would turn out.

I was really excited with the finished product! It was really easy to use more of the Wilton Candy melts to decorate the hearts. I also used red hots on some of the hearts for added decoration. I had such a fun time making all of these treats and I know by the time Jeremy’s 1st grade Valentine’s Day party rolls around I will have plenty more ideas about what to do with my next batch.
