Baking is one of my favorite things to do. I’m always looking for a new recipe that I can whip up and share with my friends and family. However, with a new baby in the house I don’t always get to bake as much as I ‘d like. And when I do get the chance, it never fails, I’m missing one of the key ingredients. Most often it’s buttermilk. That’s one of those ingredients that I only buy when I know I’m gonna use it. So I’ve learned how to adapt and actually make buttermilk milk at home! You heard me right, you can actually make buttermilk milk at home.
Make Buttermilk Milk
Alright so to make milk into buttermilk you need a few things which you probably already have on hand. You’ll need
- 1 Cup Milk (2% or Whole works best)
- 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
That’s it! You’ll also need a couple of kitchen tools like a measuring cup, measuring spoon and a spoon to stir your buttermilk. You’ll also need a lemon squeezer, Here is the one I can’t live without.
How to Make Buttermilk from Regular Milk
Ok, so first things first. Start by squeezing all the juice out of your lemon. You’ll need 1 Tablespoon of Lemon juice. Pour this into the measuring cup first.
Next pour the milk into the measuring cup until it reaches exactly one cup. Stir this milk and lemon juice mixture and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. The milk will start to thicken and curdle slightly. You’ll notice little chunks in the milk and this is what you want.
And that’s it. That’s how to make buttermilk from regular milk. It’s super easy. I would use your homemade buttermilk right after you make it. You can use this homemade buttermilk milk recipe in any recipe that calls for buttermilk. Banana Bread, Cakes, Cookies whatever you like. I recently whipped up my Easy Amish Cinnamon Bread recipe using this homemade buttermilk recipe and it turned out AMAZING!
Recipe Homemade Buttermilk
- 1 Cup 2% or Higher Milk
- 1 Tablespoon Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
- Pour 1 Tablespoon of Lemon Juice into a Cup.
- Next pour the 1 Cup of milk over the lemon Juice.
- Let Sit for 10 minutes.
