Have you had a chance to see Planes Fire and Rescue yet? It’s a really cute movie and the animation is outstanding. One of the biggest parts about this movie are the scenes in Piston Peak National Park. In fact probably 3/4 of the movie takes place in this magical place that is a cross between Yellowstone National Park and Yosemite National Park.

Toby Wilson, one of the art directors of Planes Fire and Rescue, was so awesome to sit down and explain to us the creative process behind the movie. You see there is a lot of imagination that goes into making an animated movie such as Planes but one of the things that Disney and Pixar are so known for is getting their animated films as close to real as possible. There were times when I was watching Planes 2 that I would almost forget I was watching an animated movie, the scenes from the forrest and fires looked so real.

Toby and the rest of the crew spent months researching to make this film as close to real as possible. They visited places such as Yosemite and Yellowstone, talked with real fire-fighters and park rangers and took lot’s and lot’s of amazing photos to help draw inspiration from. There were even places or people that they met or saw along the way that would help inspire characters or locations in the movie. For instance  the Grand Fusel Lodge was inspired by Old Faithful Inn located in Yellowstone.

No detail was too small for the film makers. They researched flowers and trees, making sure they had the exact look of what you would expect to find in a national park. They even added the same sprinklers that are on Old Faithful Inn on top of the Grand Fusel Lodge. There are a lot of great effects and details in this movie that you don’t want to miss. Be sure to pay close attention and look in the trees, you never know what you might see.

Planes Fire and Rescue is now in theaters everywhere. End the summer with a bang and go see it now!
