Big Hero 6 made it’s debut in theaters this past weekend and SMOKED the competition. If you haven’t had a chance to see Big Hero 6 yet, you should definitely make time because it’s one of those must see movies that need to be seen in theaters. Last week I had a chance to not only see the movie during the Big Hero 6 premiere, but I also attended a Big Hero 6 press day. During the press day I got a chance to interview the filmmakers, interview the cast, try my hand at drawing Baymax and just get an overall look at what goes into making such an amazing film.
The first part of our day was meeting the creative minds behind the movie Big Hero 6. Directors Don Hall & Chris Williams were kind enough to sit down with us for about 15 minutes and explain important aspects about the movie. The talked about who their favorite characters were, what drew them to the film and some other fun details I know all you Disney fans would be interested in knowing.
Fun Facts About Big Hero 6
- Besides Baymax, Fred is the favorite character of both Chris and Don.
- Big Hero 6 is set in the imaginary world of Sanfranokoy. The scenery in the film is mesmerizing and comes from inspiration taken from both San Francisco and Tokoyo. You will spot iconic landmarks from both of these cities throughout the film.
- The placement of the sun will always be in the right place in the sky, depending on the time of day in the scene. Depending on the geography of San Francisco. And just the moisture in the air.
- What originally attracted Don Hall to Big Hero 6 was the title. To him, It just sounded interesting. And after a little research he saw the Japanese superhero theme, thought that was super cool, and then read the books and was really struck by the characters.
- Duncan Rouleau and Steven Seagle, the creators of the original comic book loved Big Hero 6.
- The biggest change to the script was surprisingly Bamax. Originally he wasn’t that big of a character and overtime Baymax became more central.
- The directors consulted with many roboticists during the making of the film to make sure everything about Baymax was right on. Dr. Tom Wagner, who was from I, Robot became a kind of a consultant on the film early on.
How To Draw Baymax
I am by no means an artist. Not even close. But with the help of Jin Kim, the Character Design Supervisor for Big Hero 6 I gave it my best shot and attempted to draw Baymax. He really isn’t that hard of a character to draw in fact he’s pretty much one of the easiest things I have ever drawn. You basically start with the head first and make an oval, then add eyes. Next add a large pear shape body, add arms, fingers and legs and that’s it.
Jin Kim, is such a talented artists. He has worked with Disney for almost 20 years and you can tell he really loves his job! All of the animators draw from a tablet and special pen. But even so Jin says he still prefers to draw with a pencil and paper. When asked what his number one tip would be for people wanting to become a Disney animator he said to just keep drawing. Draw all the time. The more you draw the better you will get.
Big Hero 6 is now open in theaters. It’s a fantastic movie you should definitely go see. To read about the movie you can check out my Big Hero 6 review.
