From the moment my kids first saw the trailer for the film Brave I knew it would be one that we would see as soon as it came out in theaters. Last week I was very fortunate enough to be able to get an inside look at the film by not only watching it twice but I also got to interview the director, producer and cast of the film. From the opening scene to the ending credits I LOVED Brave and I couldn’t wait for my kids (ages 4 and 8) to be able to experience the movie like I had. Today they got to do just that. We headed out to our local theatre, stocked up on popcorn, soda and a few boxes of candy and headed into the theatre, my kids couldn’t have been more excited that they were finally getting a chance to see the movie that mommy had been talking about for over a week now.
If your not already aware, Brave is rated PG. As the producer and director had mentioned during our interview last week, it’s PG for a reason. There are a few scenes in the movie that are a little intense and some younger kids may become frightened, but that’s why the rating system is there so you as a parent can determine whether your child is too young or not. I knew where the “scary” parts were at in the movie so I paid close attention to my kids (particularly my 4 year old) to see what their reactions would be. Where they scared, no. Would some kids be scared, yes. Did anyone start crying or leave the theatre during the movie, no. After the movie was over I asked each of my kids what they thought, both of their answers were pretty to the point and simple. “It was AWESOME”!
I have read a few reviews over the past few days that make particular mention to Merida being a “rebel” and disobeying her parents. There is a great message in this story for not only kids but also us a parents, that we should listen to our kids even if we think we are ALWAYS right. Merida believed in something so strongly and the only way for her mother to hear her was to in a way “act out” in order for her to listen to what she was trying to say. The part I am referring to can be seen in the trailer below when she is shooting her arrows. I don’t think that the point of the movie was to make a strong female character who purposely disobeyed her parents, because this was not the case. Merida is a great character in my opinion and I would be proud if my daughter is strong-minded like her one day.
So what do you think of the film? Have you seen it or will you be seeing it? I would love to hear your thoughts.
