Making homemade finger paint is SUPER quick and easy. You’ll only need a few ingredients to make this paint and you probably already have these items in kitchen.
Homemade Finger Paint
My 2 year old likes to stick anything and everything straight into his mouth. That’s pretty typical for a toddler. So with that in mind I like to find activities for him that don’t require a call to the poison control center. When I can make something at home and know exactly what’s in it, that really puts my mind at ease. Finger painting is such a fun activity for toddlers. But honestly, I have no clue what kind of ingredients are in store bought finger paints. That’s why I like to make my own.
How Do You Make Edible Finger Paint
To make edible finger paint you will need a few ingredients. These include corn starch, water, salt, sugar and food coloring. Simple and easy! Now this isn’t a recipe that you will want your kids to eat but if they do happen to swallow the finger paint, it’s not a big deal. They may not like the taste but these ingredients are not going to hurt them.
- 1/2 Cup Corn Starch
- 1 Cup Water
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 3 TBSP Sugar
- Food Coloring
Mix all ingredients into a small sauce pan. Heat on low to medium heat stirring occasionally. Once the mixture starts to thicken (about 10 minutes) remove from heat. It will look like the consistency of pudding.
Cool the mixture and pour into individual containers. Mix in your desired colors.
Finger Painting Is Fun
I’m not going to lie, finger painting is messy but it’s so much fun for toddlers. This is a great activity to introduce colors and get your child excited about art. With this paint recipe they can use their fingers and hands to paint a picture or a paint brush. My son goes back in forth using his fingers and a brush. He gets so excited seeing the colors appear on his paper.
This finger paint is thicker than the store bough paint so it does take a little longer to dry. But I love that it doesn’t run as bad as the thinner paint. This makes for an easier cleanup.

Why Finger Painting Is Important
There are so many benefits to finger painting. I know it may seem silly, but finger painting can be a great activity for a young child’s development. Finger painting is more than just a fun activity, it encourages the use of all 5 senses. Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting (with edible paint) and smelling. It’s also a great tool for hand-eye coordination. It also allows kids to start using their imaginations.
