I am fascinated by anything that has to do with science and the human body, I guess that is why I went to school to become a nurse. But even in nursing school there are just some things that you just can’t learn from a textbook.
I was recently given the chance to visit the Bodies Exhibit that just opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 29th. Even though I have been a nurse for almost 8 years I was completely amazed by the complexity and detail of the human body. This exhibit was unlike anything I have ever seen and I was in awe from the moment I walked in till the drive home.
The Bodies Exhibit features 9 gallery rooms that contain a total of more than 150 permanently preserved human specimens consisting of whole bodies and individual organs .The bodies and other specimens are preserved using a special technique that can take anywhere from a few weeks to an entire year. The human body specimens are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation. In this process, human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened.
All of the staff were amazing at giving us detailed information on how the bodies were preserved, where they came from and could answer just about any question we threw at them. They were all GREAT and made this experience that much better.
I want everyone to know that even though the Bodies Exhibit is not for everyone it is a once in a life time experience that is fascinating. Being able to see actual lungs that have been from a smoker next to healthy lungs is a major eye opener. Next to this exhibit there is a glass box to place your cigarettes in and believe it or not it was actually 1/3 of the way full. This exhibit is not about seeing a dead body but it’s about seeing exactly how your body works and can be affected by substances and diseases like cancer and obesity. Bodies is also a excellent learning experience for everyone. I only wish this exhibit was available while I was in nursing school.
The Bodies Exhibit will be in Tulsa from now until Feb. 13th 2011 at the following location.
