I received product/compensation in exchange for sharing this information.

Experiencing the Solar Eclipse next week is going to be one of those special memories that you don’t want to miss out on. But if your town is anything like mine, those special solar eclipse glasses are nearly impossible to find. And to see the eclipse you have to have special special glasses. Looking directly at the solar eclipse can cause irreversible damage to your eyes and is extremely dangerous. You should never, ever look at the sun or solar eclipse without proper protection for your eyes.

Make Your Own Solar Eclipse Viewer

But don’t worry! Even if you don’t have a pair of glasses to watch the solar eclipse, you’re still in luck. I am going to show you how to make your very own solar eclipse viewer using materials that you probably already have on hand at home.  You’re going to need a cereal box for this project. We just happened to stock up on our favorite cereal, Fruity Pebbles this past week so we had a box ready to go.

How to Make a Solar Eclipse Viewer with a Cereal Box

First take your empty cereal box and lay it on top of a piece of white paper. Now carefully trace around the edge of the box on the paper.

Now cut this area of paper and place it into the box. If your paper isn’t staying very well you can add a piece of tape to the bottom and attach it to the bottom of the cereal box like that.

Next you are going to cut to small squares out to the top of the box. You want to make sure you leave the middle area of the cereal box intact.

Now take a small piece of foil and cover up one of the squares. Tape it to make sure it stays in place. Lastly Take your nail and poke a small hole into the foil.

To see the eclipse you are going to turn away from the sun and line up the hole in the foil with the sun. Then you are going to look inside the other hole and you will actually see the eclipse on the white piece of paper. You can practice right now with the sun to see for yourself. It’s pretty awesome.

It’s so easy to Make this DIY Solar Eclipse Viewer

And that’s it! Now you have yourself a handy-dandy DIY solar eclipse viewer! This is super easy to make and it was actually fun to be able to take one of my kids favorite cereals and create a fun project like this that didn’t cost anything to make. I love those kinds of projects!

I’d love to hear about where you will be watching the solar eclipse from! We are in Oklahoma and will have about 90% totality so not a full eclipse but still super exciting.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN! Parents please watch your children even when using this DIY Solar Eclipse viewer to make sure they are using it properly and not looking at the sun.
