We recently welcomed a new addition into our home. My third child, Caleb Michael, was born just a couple of months ago. I knew that this would be a huge adjustment for our family because it’s been quite a long time since we’ve had a baby in the house. 8 years to be exact. We had 9 months to plan and prepare our kids for a new sibling but as the time of his birth got closer I started thinking of our pets and how they were going to react to a new baby.
Our two dogs, which are Shih Tzus, are older dogs and get nervous very easily with loud noises. It’s especially stressful for them during the summer months when my two older kids are home all day. So I figured having a loud crying baby all of sudden come into the house was probably going to send them over the edge. And I was right. This was a new sound for both of my dogs and hearing Caleb cry would make them start howling and shake. It was especially hard on my youngest dog. She would hide as soon as the baby started to cry. My older kids and husband tried to comfort the dogs to reassure them it was ok, but that didn’t seem to help all that much. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered a product called Adaptil® that my dogs started to calm down and feel so much better.
Adaptil is an effective, non-drug product for dogs and puppies that is clinically proven to reduce signs of stress. Adaptil works by replicating the pheromone that is naturally produced by mother dogs after giving birth. This “Dog Appeasing Pheromone,” is a familiar scent, which will help dogs and puppies feel calm and secure.
Adaptil comes in several forms for all types of situations that will offer both long and short-term help. Adaptil offers Diffuser, Collar, Spray and Wipes. We personally use the Diffuser in the living room where our dogs are the majority of the time. We also use the collars which have really helped them as well. This summer when we plan our summer travel we will be taking the travel spray and wipes.
Adaptil has really made a big difference in helping our dogs to feel secure and comforted when the new baby cries or even when they hear loud noises coming from outside. It helps me too, because they don’t bark as much and wake up the new baby like they did before.
Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog set in it’s ways I would recommend checking out Adaptil and seeing for yourself how much of a comfort this can be for dogs. Find out more about Adaptil and #FearFree here. You can also Check them out on Facebook.
