Lemons are a pretty inexpensive item to buy in the grocery store. If you find them on sale you can often get them for around 25cents a piece. Most people think of lemons as just a food item but did you know that there are several ways to use lemons for things other than cooking? Here are a few of the ways I found that you can use lemons.

1. Whiten your fingernails:
I don’t know about you but my hands take a beating in the winter months. To help revitalize your nails during this harsh weather soak your unpolished, clean nails in a small amount of lemon juice for 2 minutes. After you soak your nails, wash your hands with soap and water and apply your favorite hand lotion. Your nails will look amazing!

2. Remove stuck on cheese or other soft foods from your cheese grater:
Slice a lemon in half and rub the pulp side against the grater. The acidity from the lemons will remove the stuck on food plus keep your grater looking shiny and new.

3. Use Lemons in place of Bleach:
Soak your clothes in a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda for at least a half and hour before washing.

4. Air Freshener:
Cut a few lemons in half and place pulp side up in a small dish in the room you want to smell fresh. In a few minutes your room will smell lemon-fresh!

5. Keep Your Potatoes From Turning Brown:
Make sure your white vegetables stay white by squeezing a tsp of lemon juice into the cooking water. My potatoes always turn brown when I am cooking them in the crockpot.

6. Smooth a Sore Throat:
Add some freshly squeezed lemon to a hot cup of water to help sooth a sore throat. To add a little sweetness you can also add a tsp of honey.

7. Give Your Hair Natural Highlights:
This one is a little tricky depending on how light you want your hair to go. Before you go out in the sun apply lemon juice to your hair and it will lighten it up. The more you use the lighter it will get so be careful!

8. Natural Ant Repellent:
I hate ants but with small kids around I don’t want to put a lot of harsh chemicals around my house. To get rid of these pesky insects find out where they are coming up and spray this area good with lemon juice. This also works outside too.

9. Keep Your Rice From Sticking To the Pan:
Add a tsp of Lemon Juice to the water while cooking your rice and it will prevent you from having a big fat mess.

10. Get Rid of Garbage Disposal Smells:
Place your lemon peels into the garbage disposal to get rid of foul odors and give your kitchen a fresh smell.
