How Much Life Insurance Do You Need?

My husband and I bought our first life insurance policy at the age of 19. At the time we didn’t buy this policy because we were looking ahead to our future but rather to save money on our home insurance. Fast forward 13 years and we still have that same policy on my husband and I am so thankful. It sounds kinda silly looking back now at how naive we were but neither one of us were ever really taught about the importance of protecting your family with life insurance. When your young you don’t really think much about death so the last thing you want to spend your money on is a life insurance policy. But as many of us know being young doesn’t make you invisible to accidents and even an early death. It’s unfortunate to think about, but it happens and being prepared is the smartest thing you can do to for your family.

Our first policy was small. We started off with this low life insurance policy which would have covered the costs of a small funeral. As we have gotten older, bought our house and had children we now realize how important it is to have a policy that will take care of things far and above a funeral. Our policies now would make sure that we had enough money to pay off our house, any debt we may have as well as funeral costs. I feel relief knowing that we have this protection and that my kids will be taken care of if something happens to either me or my husband.

My husband and I are still fairly young, in our 30′s, so the policies we both have are not too expensive. I could almost kick myself though for not purchasing a higher amount when we were younger! It would have not only been less money but we could have potentially locked in a great rate. Life insurance is an extremely important thing for everyone to have especially if you have a family. There are a variety of policies to choose from and for every budget. There is really no reason why everyone, shouldn’t have some sort of coverage.
