As a registered nurse I’ve spent many years caring for others, including the elderly. Even though I’m not currently working, I’m still the official care-giver of my family. like it or not. When one of my older relatives gets sick or needs something I’m always the one who gets called. I really don’t mind at all, it makes me feel good to be able to give back to my family. I know there are a lot of people who are in the same boat as me. In fact I have several friends right now who take care of their elderly parents full time. With the summer in full swing and vacations being taken left and right, those who are traveling with seniors will want to make sure they take the necessary steps to have a fun uneventful time. Here are a few tips for traveling with the elderly to help you out.
Tips for Traveling With The Elderly
Vacationing with seniors can be a very memorable experience. I for one can remember vacationing with my grandparents as a kid and how much fun I had with them.
Arrange for Special Services Ahead of Time
When your older, it’s not as easy to get around as it used to be. So making sure that you call ahead for special services before you reach your destination can really prevent a big headache. If you are flying, call the airport ahead of time to arrange a for a wheelchair. If you are staying in a hotel, make sure you get a room that can accommodate any special needs your loved one may have.
Leave Plenty of Room for Downtime
As relaxing as a vacation can be, it can equally be as exhausting. Make sure that you make room for downtime so that you and your loved one can rest. Don’t try to over-do it. If you are on a road trip make sure that you plan for plenty of rest room breaks and time where you can get out of the car and stretch your legs.
Make Sure Essentials are Easily Accessible
Make sure that you have all of the important stuff like medication, important documents, clothing, under garments such as Poise® and Depend® products easily accessible. That way if you need something quickly you don’t have to go digging through all your luggage to find it.
Buy Extra Poise® and Depend® products
It never fails that whenever I am away from home I always run out of the important stuff. That’s why before you head out on your next road trip or vacation make sure you have plenty of Poise® and Depend® products for your loved one. Both of these products are great solutions to incontinence and having plenty of them with you during your trip will help your loved one feel comfortable and relaxed.
