Growing up, we never wore sunscreen. Ever. We had an in-ground pool in our back yard and practically lived out there in the summertime. I can only remember a handful of times that I got a sunburn and that was when we would spend a week or two out at the lake. Even as I grew older I figured that because I didn’t really burn, I didn’t need sunscreen. That was pretty naive to think.
Now that I am an adult I wear sunscreen religiously, and my kids do to. If we are outside for even a short amount of time, we lather up with the white stuff. I know now that just because your skin doesn’t burn, doesn’t mean you aren’t causing irreversible damage. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way when I learned I had Basal Cell Carcinoma last year. It started as a small sore that I didn’t even really notice at first. But then after a year of it going away and then coming back, I knew that something was wrong. I headed to my dermatologist who gave me the diagnosis a week after the biopsy. Even though it wasn’t a deadly form of skin cancer, I was still very afraid and cried for a good hour after I found out.
The process of removing the cancer was painful because of where it was located. Directly under my left eye. I had to go to a plastic surgeon to have it removed and this little tiny dot required 14 stitches. However, as painful and uncomfortable as this experience was. I know it could have been a lot worse. So now, I don’t take any chances. I make sure that we have a bottle of quality sunscreen with us at all times.
Blue Lizard Sunscreen
Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen is one of my favorites. Blue Lizard Sunscreen was born in Australia, where standards for sunscreens are the highest in the world. They offer Broad spectrum SPF 30+ and give both UVA and UVB protection. Although their products are now manufactured in the U.S., they continue to adhere to the most stringent Australian standards so you can feel safe about protecting your skin while you play under the sun. All of their products are Dermatologist recommended.
Blue Lizard is a pharmaceutical-grade sunscreen that is made by Crown Laboratories with the highest quality ingredients. They are ranked as one of the top sunscreens by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). There are currently five sunscreen formulas available: Baby, Sensitive, Face, Sport & Regular. These all provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB coverage. The Baby & Sensitive formula is paraben-free, chemical-free and fragrance-free, making it perfect for delicate baby skin. For those of you who like to play outdoors and get hot, wet and sweaty I recommend the Sport & Regular which are both extremely water resistant. These formulas meet Australian standards of staying on in 240 minutes of whirlpool water.
So Why Not SPF 50+ Sunscreen
That’s a great question. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits the maximum SPF value at 50+, but according to Blue Lizard, “if you buy a sunscreen that advertises an SPF of more than 30+, you’re paying for something that doesn’t really exist”.
One of the things that makes this sunscreen standout out is Blue Lizard’s patented PBA-free Smart Bottle™. This bottle changes color from white to blue (or pink for Baby formula) when it is exposed to harmful UV rays reminding you to put on sunscreen. You see, even if you aren’t directly in the sun you can still be effected by those pesky UV rays. When in doubt grab the bottle and see what color it is. I really love this and my kids think it’s so neat.
