Road Trips are a great way for people to discover the beauty found throughout America. I know it’s easy to hop on a plane to quickly get from one destination to another, but if you do that then you’ll miss out on all the adventure.
Discover Adventure Road in Oklahoma
Years ago road trips are how families traveled. That’s how families discovered new and exciting adventures along the way. Oklahoma want’s to help get families back to how it used to be. The Great American Road Trip has been reborn, here, on 130 miles of Oklahoma highway stretching from the Red River border to the revitalized heart of Oklahoma City. There is so much beauty and excitement here in Oklahoma and I am so excited to share this initiative. My family and I recently had the chance to explore some of these destinations on Adventure Road and had a blast.
Where To Stay On Adventure Road
Oklahoma has some amazing hotels but you will find one very special hotel on Adventure Road. The Colcord Hotel has been around since 1910 and was actually the first skyscraper in Oklahoma City. This is beautiful and historic hotel that is worth visiting. Just walking through the lobby I was memorized by the original marble that covered the walls. But the rooms are anything but original. They are luxurious and comfortable all rolled into one.
One of the perks of staying at the Colcord is the complimentary coffee or hot tea, with a daily newspaper delivered right to your door.
Eating On Adventure Road
If you are looking for some great food, then Oklahoma is the place you want to be! I’m not just saying that because I live here either. I have traveled all over the U.S and still haven’t found a place that tops Oklahoma cooking. We had the chance to try out a few places while on our Adventure Road Trip and they were so good I had to share.
Cattlemen’s Steakhouse
Imagine owning a popular restaurant only to have it lost in the blink of an eye in a poker game. That’s exactly what happened at Cattlemen’s to owner Hank Frey in 1945.
I knew that I had to try a steak at Cattlemen’s but deciding which kind was the hard part. They have T-Bones, Rib eyes, Filet Mignon, Chopped Steak, Peppered Steak and many more. We decided to try the Presidential T-Bone because that’s the one that George Bush had while dining at Cattlemen’s. It was juicy, tender and the flavor was out of this world good. Honestly it was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot of steaks.
The other members of my family all got different things so we could try a variety of foods at Cattlemen’s. Those include Fried Catfish, Chicken Fried Steak, 1/2 pound Cheeseburger and a side of Okra. The final verdict of those foods: AMAZING. There was not one thing we got that everyone didn’t just devour. Now it will be tempting to stuff yourself full but be sure you save room for dessert. My recommendation. Coconut Meringue Pie.
Flint at Colcord Hotel
Great food and an amazing atmosphere is what you’ll find waiting for you at Flint. Flint is located inside the Colcord Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. It’s a beautiful restaurant with contemporary decor. They have a wide range of food options including steak, swordfish, pasta and burgers.
The food at Flint was fantastic. We had no leftovers to take home because our plates were wiped clean. I do want to mention that even though Flint is more of a sophisticated dining experience, my kids loved it! They loved trying the different foods and had no complaints at all. Flint is a great place to eat.
What To Do On Adventure Road
Andy Alligators
I wish I would have been recording my kids voices when we drove past Andy Alligator’s on the highway. They let out shrills of excitement and couldn’t wait to get out of the car and experience some fun. Andy Alligator’s Fun Park is a combination of indoor and outdoor fun. On the inside of their 12,000 square foot building you will find arcade games, bumper cars, rock walls, laser tag, a pizzeria and my kids favorite the Frog Hopper. Outside is 8 acre’s of fun with go-carts, batting cages, water wars, bumper boats, 18 holes of miniature golf, and a climbing Mountain.
Unfortunately it rained during our visit so we didn’t get a chance to experience the outdoor fun but that’s all the more reason to visit again.
Hey Day Entertainment
Hey Day Entertainment is located right across the street from Andy Alligators so it was easy to go to both places in one day. This place is SO much fun! You could easily spend an entire afternoon at Hey Day. This large entertainment venue is home to bowling, laser tag, a ropes course, miniature golf, and lot’s of arcade games. You can do just one of the activities or buy day passes which allow you to do more than one thing. We loved the laser tag and the ropes course! These are both very high on our list of recommendations at Hey Day Entertainment.
Frontier City
Out of all the places on Adventure Road I have to say I was most excited about visiting Frontier City. I used to frequent this amusement park as a kid but it’s been years since I have visited as an adult. And this visit would be the first time my kids have ever been, so it was a special moment for our family. As fun as I remember Frontier City being, it was about 10x that! They have grown in leaps and bounds over the years with several new rides and attractions that the whole family will enjoy. The newest ride is the brain drain that just opened in 2015.
In addition to rides, Frontier City also has the Wild West Water Works that has over 198 ways for you to get wet! You do have to bring proper swim attire for this side of the park, so make sure you pack a swim suit.
I got the new GoPro Hero 4 Session before this trip so I thought our time at Frontier City would be the perfect opportunity to test it out. I got some great shots of the rides, especially the roller coasters. Check it out below.
White Water Bay
Although we didn’t get a chance to visit White Water Bay due to the rain and colder weather, I still wanted to mention this fun place as an option for your Adventure Road Trip. Frontier City and White Water Bay have combo tickets were you can visit both parks for one price. You can spend a good part of your day at Frontier City and then the rest cooling down at White Water Bay.
There is so much to see and do along Adventure Road in Oklahoma. I encourage you to visit AdventureRoad.com to plan your next adventure.
