Last week my daughter Aubrey turned 7. It’s hard to believe that my little girl is growing up so fast but getting older is apart of life. It seems like an eternity ago, but I remember when I was 7 years old. I’m dating myself but the year was 1988. Like my daughter, this year was a big year for me. I was learning how to read and write, ride a bike and I became more independent each day. I loved the excitement of learning new things but when I struggled with something, I always took it hard. I didn’t like to fail. Eventually I grew out of this stage but now that my daughter is 7 I can see her experience the same excitement and frustrations that I did at that age.
Failure is ok
It’s important to me that my daughter knows that it’s ok to fail. Failure is what makes us do even better the next time around. Failure is what makes us be our best. I think so many kids are afraid that they are going to fail that they don’t even try. But that’s where we as parents need to step in and let our kids know that everyone fails and that’s ok. We need to encourage our kids that even when they fail they need to pick themselves up and try again.
GoldieBlox Toys For Girls
This is one of the messages that GoldieBlox, which produces “toys for future innovators,” wants to send out to kids. GoldieBlox is designed to inspire girls’ interest in math, science and engineering. These are all subjects that I struggled with in school. I found them boring but I think had I had something like GoldieBlox I would have looked at these subjects with a different point of view.
We were recently given the opportunity to try out a few Goldieblox toys. I was really excited to see what my daughter thought about Goldieblox and being able to build with these toys. After 10 minutes with GoldieBlox she was HOOKED. She loves these toys and I was excited to see how her self-esteem skyrocketed after being able to build something on her own.
One of my daughter’s favorite toys was the zipline action figure, which she put together all by herself. She had a little bit of trouble at first but after reading the directions again, she figured out what she had done wrong and corrected the problem. This was a great lesson for her to see that even if you don’ t get it the first time, don’t give up! There is always a solution to the problem.
I am beyond impressed with not only the GoldieBlox toys, but the message that it gives to young girls. Aubrey has had these new toys for a little over two weeks now and she loves them. I haven’t seen her this excited about a toy in a while. I love seeing what her little mind can create each time she plays with GoldieBlox.
If you have a daughter, granddaughter or even know a young girl I really encourage you to watch this GoldieBlox video below. It has an amazing message about teaching girls not to be afraid to fail and try again. I have always taught my daughter that it’s ok to fail but after watching this I want to encourage her even more. It’s really eye opening.
