I crossed something off my bucket list this past week. And it wasn’t just a little something. This was an item that I have been dying to do for many years, and I finally got the chance. Last week I landed in Nassau, Bahama’s and hopped onto a boat headed for Blue Lagoon Island. While on the boat I looked up at the sky and noticed that the clouds looked just like a dolphin, which I thought was pretty ironic.
After a beautiful 20 minute boat ride through the crystal blue ocean we entered Blue Lagoon Island, which I can only describe as paradise.
Blue Lagoon Island
Blue Lagoon Island is home to Dolphin Encounters which is one of the most popular attractions in the Bahamas. Here at the island, you can choose a variety of activities including swimming with the dolphins, a dolphin encounter, sea lion encounter or you can just enjoy a day on the private beach. Since we were only in Nassau for a few hours, we decided to do the dolphin encounter and enjoy some beach time after we were done.
Dolphin Encounter In The Bahamas
Making your dolphin encounter reservation is easy and can be done online athttp://www.dolphinencounters.com. I would recommend making your reservation early, because since this is such a popular attraction you don’t want to take the chance of the days you want being filled up. On the day of your visit, you will proceed to Paradise Island Ferry Terminal. Here a boat will take you to the Island, which is about 3 miles away from Nassau. This is a beautiful boat ride where you will get to see some of the most beautiful parts of Nassau, including the crystal blue ocean.
Once on the island, we were escorted to the area where we would get instructions on what we would be doing for the day. Here we would also learn quite a bit about dolphins and what and what not to do when you see them in the wild. It was actually very educational, and I think a great opportunity to help people learn more about these beautiful mammals.
Shawn The Dolphin
After the brief overview the group was taken down to the docks where we would meet Shawn, a feisty lovable dolphin.
The dolphin encounter is different from a swim, but you will still get the chance to touch the dolphin, kiss and hug him and even dance with him. There will also be a few other surprises during the encounter as well. While pictures and video will be taken by Dolphin Encounters, which you can purchase later, I would recommend bringing a water-proof camera. There are so many photo and video opportunities during your encounter and having your own camera will allow you to capture those moments.
Of course the pictures taken by the folks at Dolphin Encounters are awesome and they make sure everyone gets a picture with a dolphin. Here is my son giving Shawn a hug. It’s one of my favorites.
Depending on the size of your group, the encounter should last around two hours. Afterwards you can enjoy the beautiful amenities of Blue Lagoon Island including the private beach, and water play ground which is fun for all ages. We only had about an hour to spend on the beach which is something I was so disappointed in. I wish we would have had more time to experience Blue Lagoon Island because it is really one of a kind. But we had to get back to our cruise ship before it left the port.
Blue Lagoon Island is Amazing
We had one of the most amazing experiences ever. This was truly one of those things that I feel like everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Even my mom who is one of those people who never get’s in the ocean loved every second of the encounter. We will definitely be back for a round two.
