The wait is finally over, today is May 30th and that means that Maleficent is now open and in theaters everywhere! Last week I had a chance to see an advance screening of the movie and I have been bursting at the seams to tell you guys all about it. I have had a lot of my readers ask me questions about the movie recently and I know a lot of you have been curious to know is Maleficent is ok for kids and if it’s scary. Keeping reading and you will find out exactly what I thought about Maleficent.
So the question is “Was it worth the wait“?
Simply put the answer would be YES! Maleficent far exceeded my expectations and left me wanting to watch it again and again. It had all of the elements of a Disney movie with the princess, fairies and prince but this isn’t your typical Disney movie. It’s packed full of action, adventure, fantasy and an incredible story line.
Maleficent seems scary in some of the previews. Is the movie okay for kids?
Maleficent is rated PG. If I had to compare it to another movie as far as “scary” goes I would put it in the same category as Oz The Great and Powerful. There are a few parts that may be a little intense and Maleficent herself is a little intimidating, but overall the movie is not scary. After seeing the movie for myself, I will be taking both of my kids (ages 6 and 10) to see the movie this weekend and I think they will do just fine. This is really the type of situation that a parent has to use their best judgment. You are the person who knows your child the best and what they can handle. I will tell you that even though Maleficent looks scary in the beginning your view of her will change by the end of the movie and I think it’s a great way to show kids that just because a person looks a certain way on the outside doesn’t necessarily mean they are a bad person inside.
Favorite part of the Movie!
Oh this is a hard one! There are so many and I don’t want to give anything away. The first part of the movie is probably my favorite just because it gives you an insight to another part of the Sleeping Beauty story that you never knew before. Maleficent is such an evil villain but she wasn’t always that way. There is a reason that her heart turned to black and I think after watching the movie you may find yourself really connecting with Maleficent. I also really love the fairies in the movie! They are hilarious and will definitely make you giggle.
Will my son like Maleficent?
If your son is anything like mine then YES he will love it! Even though Sleeping Beauty is a fairy tale it’s not the fairy tale we used to watch growing up. The movie is not geared towards just girls but rather the whole family so everyone will take something away from Maleficent. I think boys will love the special effects because they are out of this world!
What type of message will I take away from Maleficent.
If you know Disney, then you know that almost all of there movies have some sort of message that you take away from the film. Maleficent is no different. This is such a powerful story that showcases a multitude of emotions such as love, greed, and resentment. What’s shown throughout the movie is the negative effects of what happens if you keep these negative feelings inside and how everything can change with true love.
I can’t tell you enough how much I loved this film! It’s been over a week since I have seen it and I have been so excited to be able to take my family to see it opening weekend. I know they are going to love it just as much as me.
Just in case you haven’t seen a preview of the movie yet, below is a short clip of another one of my favorite scenes. Here Maleficent shows herself to Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) for the first time.
I would love to hear your thoughts about Maleficent! If you have already seen it leave me a comment and let me know what you thought. If you plan on seeing it, I would love to hear that too! Remember Maleficent is now open in theaters!
