Champions For Kids: Because Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal of the Day! #SIMPLEGiving

I participated in this program on behalf of Champions for Kids and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.

This past week my son came home from school like any other day of the week. But this particular day was different because he had a very special homework assignment for the next day. Since state testing was due to begin his teacher had instructed each student to come to class with a full stomach from a hearty breakfast.

This was a pretty easy homework assignment for my son because he eats a good breakfast each and everyday. But this got me thinking about the other kids who weren’t so fortunate.

Did you know that 9.8 million kids get free or reduced price school breakfast on an average day, but 10.6 million eligible kids go without? Hunger has a huge effect on how a child performs at school. In fact, 9 out of 10 teachers say having a healthy breakfast is a key to academic achievement.

SIMPLE Giving is a Champions for Kids program that makes it simple for all of us to help kids in our own community. There is no excuse for any child to go hungry in this country and to help ensure children can eat breakfast and stay focused in school, Champions for Kids is teaming up with Kellogg Company and Diamond Foods for a SIMPLE Giving program.

It’s easy to participate. All you have to do is simply purchase and donate breakfast food items at your local participating Walmart from April 21 through May 5. If your Walmart store is participating, simply purchase breakfast foods and place them in the purple donation bins at the front of the store after checkout.

To see a list of participating stores, click here. All of the donations go to children in the school district where the Walmart store is located!

As many of us already know, the first meal is the most important one of the day; however, 10% of U.S. kids in food-insecure homes aren’t guaranteed a breakfast! Breakfast plays such an important role in a student’s academic success. Can you imagine trying to concentrate when your stomach is rumbling because it’s empty.

Such a great way to make sure kids get breakfast. Will be going to the store to make sure I get at least something to help.

  2. says

This is a great initiative that makes a serious impact . . . breakfast is so important. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I can remember those days when I was so hungry that it was distracting. I love the SIMPLEgiving concept and will definitely be taking part!

  3. says

What a great program – it makes me sad to think of kids who don’t start off the day with a good breakfast.

(On a side note, is that a picture of your son’s breakfast pancakes? Can you PLEASE come to my house and make them for ME???)

This is SO important! Love this! I was a hungry kid… it is a horrible feeling, and it is awesome to see this topic is finally being dealt with! NO kid should be hungry–especially in a nation like ours!
